📍 Incident at Kapil Sharma’s Café Kap Cafe
On the night of July 9, 2025, Kap’s Café, a newly opened establishment in Surrey, British Columbia, owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma and his wife Ginni Chatrath, was targeted in a shooting incident. At approximately 1:50 a.m. local time, multiple gunshots were fired at the café’s window while staff members were inside. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Surrey Police Service responded promptly, securing the area and initiating an investigation.
Surveillance footage and witness accounts indicate that the shooter fired at least nine rounds from a vehicle before fleeing the scene. Bullet holes were observed in the café’s windows, and nearby buildings sustained minor damage. The incident has raised concerns within the local community, particularly among the South Asian diaspora in Surrey.
Harjit Singh Laddi, an operative of the banned extremist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a social media post, Laddi stated that the shooting was a retaliation for alleged derogatory remarks made about Nihang Sikhs on Sharma’s television show, “The Kapil Sharma Show.” Laddi emphasized that such mockery of religious identities would not be tolerated. He also mentioned attempts to contact Sharma’s management, which reportedly went unanswered.

The café also extended gratitude to the Surrey and Delta Police for their swift response and efforts to ensure safety during this challenging time.
